Customer Development: Find Out What Your Customers Really Want

Written by Jon on 13th March 2017

Doing a podcast has been on Jon’s wishlist for quite a long time. So when we decided we wanted to do some content on Customer Development, the perfect opportunity arose.

For the last 6 months, we’ve been attending a programme called the Founders’ Network ran by TechNorth. It’s all about empowering startups in the North of England with the knowledge they need to grow.

Our first session was actually about Customer Development, and ran by today’s interviewee Rob Fitzpatrick.

Rob has worked in and with numerous startups and is one of the co-founders of Founders’ Network.

At that first session, he shared some great stories and practical advice on the subject and we left feeling inspired (and with a copy of his book in hand). So fast forward to today, and we knew there was only one person we could speak to about Customer Development.

We hope you enjoy our first podcast!

Key Takeaways:

  • Know the difference between compliments and commitments
  • Find out what customers are already doing and why
  • Ask why a customer wants a particular feature before you build something

(Note: Apologies for the echo when Rob’s talking, we removed the worst of it.)

We’d love to get your feedback on our first podcast, so let us know what you think below and who you’d like to see next.
